Tyler Perry is being accused of using a gospel song in his television show, “Meet the Browns,” without bothering to pay for it.

TMZ.com is reporting that several characters sang the words, “The devil thought he had me … but I got away,” in a 2009 episode of the show.

Songwriter Johnny Tyrone Stringfield claims in his lawsuit that the lyrics came from his song, “I Got Away,” which he copyrighted in 2008.

Stringfield, who filed the lawsuit Wednesday in federal court in Los Angeles, claims Perry and the companies behind the show owe him more than $100,000 to make things right.

OMGracious, the ignorance. The man is supposed to get paid for someone who is MAKING A PROFIT to use his song. What is wrong with you people?! Just like when artists "sample" others artists' work, they are expected to pay, unless there have been some type of other "arrangements" made. You can't just take someone else's work, use it to profit you, then expect not to pay the person. Come on now folks. And, I like Tyler.

I'm a Tyler fan-BUT-as I recall, Tyler used to complain about the BOOTLEGGERS stealing HIS WORK. If Stringfield copyrighted this song & Tyler used it, then Tyler should pay. IT'S NOT PERSONAL--IT'S BUSINESS! It's also the LAW. Andfor the box-of-rocks person who tried to compare Tyler using the song to being sung in a church. YOU'RE not charged a fee when you enter that church to "specifically" hear THAT song. Tyler is paid BIG MONEY for his sitcoms, so when HE uses the WORK of others--HE SHOULD PAY--JUST AS HE'S BEING PAID. And furthermore--leave GOD out of all of this.

Tyler Perry should sue this guy! He should sue him for a portion of the royalties he undoubtedly will get from people buying this song now that is has gained notoriety from "Meet the Browns". Worst case scenario is the judge calls it a draw and the awards off set. I'm sure Perry can afford to draw this thing out in court longer than this Stringfield guy. By the time the case comes around he will have spent more money in attorney fees than he would be awarded. Fight fire with fire.
