Founded in 1990 to promote cultural and educational awareness of Africa, it has now become the place to go for all things African in Oakland. Africa by the Bay carries a huge selection of African textiles and sells fabric by the yard. Or you can use their tailors and have clothes designed uniquely for you.
The establishment also sells traditional African clothing and contemporary clothing using African fabrics for everyone in the family, including toddlers. While you are there, choose gifts from a wide array of African-themed instruments, accessories household goods, body products and more.
Brown Sugar Kitchen
While you are in Oakland, try the Brown Sugar Kitchen. This great eatery is chef and owner Tanya Holland’s interpretation of soul food with her French influence. Her distinct wine list features wines from the South of France where she received her training; she also offers wines from local African-American vintners. While you’re there, try specialties like buttermilk fried chicken, cornmeal waffles and Creole BBQ Shrimp. Yummy!
African American Shakespeare Company
Catch a show at the African-American Shakespeare Company in San Francisco where minority actors play classical roles. These classical plays are presented from the perspective of someone of color, providing quite a contrast to typical classical stage plays.

Want a place where you can grab something to eat and listen to live jazz while you are in San Francisco? Yoshi’s on Fillmore is the place for you. They host two live shows per night with drinks and dinner service throughout the shows.
